People don’t usually associate aloe vera with haircare, but for the very same reason that aloe is good for the skin, it is also good for the scalp. Most of us are familiar with rubbing aloe on the skin after exposure to the sun for its hydrating and nourishing properties. Those same qualities have the same application on the scalp, which is important for maintaining healthy hair.
What Makes Aloe Good For Hair?
Aloe contains a specific group of enzymes called proteolytic enzymes. When applied to the scalp, these enzymes repair dead skin cells, which is an important aspect of maintaining healthy hair. When the scalp is dry or damaged, hair growth and nourishment suffers as a result.
As well as reducing dandruff and itchy scalp, aloe vera also conditions hair. Aloe has a very similar chemical profile to keratin, which is the material that hair is made out of. In that way, aloe rejuvinates hair with the very same nutrients that make up hair, and at the same time improves the health of the scalp.
Aloe vera is most commonly used on hair to prevent or reduce hair loss. Again, this is primarily due to how it helps the scalp maintain the correct environment for hair growth. Even on healthier scalps and healthier hair types, using aloe can improve thickness and strength.
How To Use Aloe For Hair & How To Make Your Own Aloe Hair Mask
For those who aren’t fond of mixing up ingredients in the kitchen, fresh aloe juice (straight from the plant) can be rubbed directly onto the scalp and left to do its work. Simply wash it off after 15 minutes and enjoy the difference.
However, the magic of herbal medicine is all in the mixing, and it’s no different for an aloe hair mask. It works much better when mixed with other, complementary ingredients. I’ve got two recipes below that you can use to create your very own aloe vera hair mask.
Aloe Hair Mask For Shiny Hair
This recipe requires a few basic ingredients that you should find in your pantry or fridge. This recipe promotes hair health, but more importantly, is a treatment to make your hair look shiny and freshly coiffed.
You will need:
- 3 tsp fresh aloe vera gel
- 2 tsp natural yogurt
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 tsp olive oil
Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl and apply generously all over hair and scalp. Massage in well for at least 10 minutes. Let it sit for 30 minutes before washing it out.
Aloe Hair Mask For Scalp Health & Hair Loss
This recipe is quite possibly the easiest recipe for maintaining a healthy scalp. You only need two ingredients: aloe vera gel and coconut oil.
Mix equal quantities of aloe gel and coconut oil into a bowl and apply to the scalp. Leave it in for as long as possible (overnight if you can handle it). If you are brave enough to go pooless (no shampoo) until 24 hours later, you’ll be enjoying bouncy, soft hair and a very well conditioned scalp.
Though aloe is often overlooked for its ability to nourish and care for hair, it is one of the easiest DIY solutions to scalp problems. We often associate aloe with its hydrating properties for skin, but we also forget that the scalp is made out of skin and could also use hydration from time to time. Aloe is the perfect, easy solution to any scalp problems that appear, especially when they affect hair health. Enjoy these DIY recipes for haircare, and enjoy healthier hair!
